Would you like to be part of the Salish crew? 

Salish Sea Expeditions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to provide an opportunity for students to design and conduct real scientific research from the decks of a 61′ sailing vessel on Puget Sound.  These innovative ‘science-under-sail” programs are tailored for students from 5th through 12th grades.  The programs are conducted aboard the SV Carlyn, which you may have seen visiting Lake Union Park. It occasionally finds itself in the waters of Lake Union, flocking to visit with the vessels at CWB and the Historic Ships Wharf.

Salish Sea Expeditions is hiring Licensed Mates/Instructors for the Fall 2011 program season of September 6th – October 29th.

MATE duties include, but are not limited to: ensuring that all deck operations are carried out in a safe and orderly manner, instructing and overseeing students in proper vessel operation, and presenting nautical science topics both in the classroom and on the vessel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 50 ton Inland Mate license. Experience teaching students.  Demonstrated ability to handle and maintain vessel and to safely direct/instruct others to operate the vessel.   First aid/CPR required.  Advanced first aid/EMT/WFR, teaching certificate highly desirable.  Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities,  lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as the abilities to be an effective leader and team member in the risk management strategies. of  the organization.

COMPENSATION: $1500-$1800 per month, depending on experience, plus shared room and partial board.
