Mercer Street Construction: Closure Update

May 13, 2011

SDOT advises travelers of the following construction activities. If traveling to The Center for Wooden Boats in South Lake Union, Seattle, please be advised that vehicular access may be limited and/or re-routed.

Weeknights, beginning Monday, May 16: Temporary re-routing of Westlake Ave N
Southbound Westlake Ave. N travelers will experience a temporary one block reroute to 9th Ave. N just south of Aloha St. during weeknights beginning Monday, May 16. From 9th Ave. N travelers can turn left onto Broad St. to return to southbound Westlake. Northbound traffic will continue on Westlake as usual. This night work will take approximately one week to complete and work hours are anticipated to be 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

This unanticipated night work accommodates a larger work area in Westlake Ave. N for crews installing stormwater drainage facilities as part of Mercer Corridor Project utility upgrades. During storm drain pipe installation this week crews attempted to avoid further impacts to traffic in the area by working in a limited construction zone. It has been determined that a slighty larger work area is needed to efficiently install the stormwater drainage system.

May 20 – May 23: Weekend closure of I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St.
The next weekend closure of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. will occur May 20 – May 23. Closure hours are expected to be from Friday at 11:00 p.m. to Monday at 5:00 a.m.

Updated detour route maps are available on the project website at:  http://www.seattle.gov/Transportation/ppmp_mercer.htm. Detour routes shown will be signed on roadways and may be heavily used, particularly Denny Way both eastbound and westbound. Travelers are advised to consider alternate routes to their destinations such as SR 99 or alternate I-5 exits and entrances.

During these closures, the I-5 on-ramp at University Street will be concurrently closed to provide more efficient traffic flow around the closed Mercer Street exit lane. Fairview Avenue N will also be closed between Mercer Street and Valley Street, and Mercer Street will be closed to through traffic between Westlake Avenue N and Fairview Avenue N. All detour routes will be clearly marked to support traffic flow around the closures.
