R-Class Sloops to Race on Friday

September 8, 2010

On Friday, September 10, the R-class sloops Aloha, Lady Van and Pirate will tow out to the starting line off Port Townsend for the first fleet racing for their class on the Pacific in seventy years.  Nearly extinct, the Center for Wooden Boats’ Pirate has inspired a number of local sailors to consider old Rs for special restoration projects.   In their heyday in the Twenties and Thirties, the Rs were the preeminent inter club racers in North America and contested for the most prestigious perpetual trophies and challenge cups.

The boats will depart the marina at 10:30 Friday for two races and about 3:30 for a third contest on Saturday. Pirate will be skippered by Scott Rohrer while Lady Van and Aloha will be steered by their respective owners, Donald Martin (Vancouver) and Alex Foley (Sidney, BC).   Next year, Robert Cadranell’s Ace will join the group.
