Over the Bar: Lee Adams

August 2, 2010

The CWB Volunteer Corps has lost a dedicated and exceptional member. Lee Adams, sailing instructor extraordinaire, died early last week after a fall while returning from climbing the Emmons Glacier near Mt. Rainier. An accomplished mountain climber, also an instructor, he was swept down when one of four returning climbers slipped and dragged the group down the slopes. Lee was the only one injured fatally.

Lee has volunteered at CWB as a sailing instructor for a long time. He preferred to teach sailing classes during the summer months  because his winters were spent teaching skiing. Many times when we had a “panic” need for an instructor he made himself available at the last minute whether the need was for One-On-One, SailNOW! or weekend Public Sails. An accomplished and exceptional sailor who grew up sailing – yes, Beetle Cats – in his native Freeport, Maine, Lee was always a student favorite for his ingrown knowledge of sailing which made the students feel relaxed. Not to forget his ever present smile. Most of the time he rode his bicycle from his home in Bothell, Lee, a biological research scientist, was a big lover of the outdoors.

Lee Adams represents the spirit of the generous and knowledgeable CWB volunteer – and we are blessed to have many. CWB attributes it greatness to volunteers like Lee who have spent countless hours teaching students to sail and have smiled all the while. We will be forever grateful.

A memorial service will be held at the South Freeport Church, 98 S. Freeport Rd, Freeport, ME 04032 at 2PM, August 14.
